Preserving identity

Birmingham has a strong industrial heritage, which is reflected in the design and technical aesthetic of multinational company ARUP's new building and is enhanced by the lighting concept. The brief was to create durable, flexible, and inspiring office spaces that meet employees' needs – today and in the future.

Values in light

The building is situated directly above a road tunnel that was built 55 years ago by ARUP itself and serves as an important arterial road. This special location had a significant influence on the design of the steel structure. The engineering approach shapes the architecture and is evident in the visible steel frames that run through the entire building. The suspended MOVE IT 25/45 track systems take up the design language of the exposed structure and highlight the technical aesthetics. This concept was deliberately emphasised in the interior design to create an authentic and technology-oriented design. The lighting design picks up on this idea and implements it consistently with a modular approach.

MOVE IT 45 SYSTEM

An office for designers and engineers

Diversely designed and illuminated areas provide employees with flexible and comfortable working spaces. The office concept is being realised in an era of change, in which work environments are increasingly geared towards flexibility and individual needs. This has led to the creation of diverse office landscapes: Some are vibrant and dynamic, others offer peace and privacy. This concept is also reflected in the lighting: While some zones are brighter and more functional, others create a homely ambience. The flexible track system allows the various insets to be placed as needed, ensuring maximum adaptability.

A clear commitment to well-being

Sustainability was a key consideration for the design and lighting. That is why the installation level was not covered, which both reduces material consumption and simplifies maintenance. The lighting delineates the workspace from the technical zones above, meets energy efficiency and durability requirements, and contributes significantly to greater well-being. This is achieved thanks to the Tunable White luminaires, which promote the daytime light curve and make an important contribution to achieving the WELL Platinum certification.

A well-balanced result

The office design and the bespoke, multifaceted lighting design have produced a balanced environment that moves away from clinical and sterile office landscapes. Workspaces that are more than just a place to get work done have been created. It is a harmonious, balanced, and inspirational environment that also offers a space to linger.

‘Our new office concept allows us to celebrate our heritage and express our identity and values as engineers and designers.’

In the spotlight

Design in its entirety inspires me – understanding the interplay of ideas and the realisation that only a holistic approach to design can create something that is greater than the sum of its parts. I particularly value working with interdisciplinary teams that are curious, want to learn from each other, and challenge and inspire each other to create something extraordinary.
