The newly designed office spaces at XAL’s headquarters in Graz set standards for a modern work environment. Product design studio 13&9 and INNOCAD architecture made the health and well-being of employees their top priority. In addition to open architecture and innovative light and acoustic solutions, the latest scientific findings from the fields of neuroscience and biophilic design were incorporated.
The new rooms feature large acoustic wall panels with fractal patterns that signify a breakthrough in biophilic design. These patterns are not a design trend. Rather, they are based on the research by Prof Richard Taylor (University of Oregon & Fractals Research, USA) and 13&9 Design. Inspired by fractal patterns found in nature and their relaxing effect, they bring these natural structures into the interior to reconnect people with the health benefits of the beauty of nature. The patterns are created using a special computer program developed by Prof Taylor and 13&9 Design and were optimised in collaboration with our acoustics experts, implemented with a neutral colour concept, and the surfaces are illuminated to achieve the best effect.

The high-quality SOUNDCATCHER is the ideal solution for further optimising acoustics and light quality. With its unique design, this product combines work-compatible lighting with effective sound absorption, offers a wide range of applications, and is a real eye-catcher in the office. As a stand-alone design object or as part of a group, in an angular, round, or octagonal shape, it offers a fascinating new look from any viewing angle.
Both SOUNDCATCHER and TASK system luminaires are ideal for use at computer workstations. They provide glare-free, optimal, and energy-efficient work light. The sensors integrated into the TASK system luminaires adjust the lighting to the ambient brightness and room activity. This creates a natural lighting mood while saving energy. In addition, data such as air quality or noise levels can provide valuable insights into environmental conditions and thus sustainably optimise future space utilisation and energy efficiency.
Anastasija Lesjak, Co-Founder of 13&9 Design and ScienceDesignLab
13&9 Design, led by Anastasija and Martin Lesjak (architect, CEO and founder of INNOCAD architecture), is both a design studio for international companies and its own label which designs, produces, and distributes product collections in collaboration with specialised partners in the fields of lighting, furniture, flooring, fashion, accessories, exhibition and sound design. With their transdisciplinary approach, 13&9 have received numerous awards, been featured in many publications, and exhibited their versatile work internationally. Anastasija and Martin Lesjak were awarded the title ‘Product Designers of the Year 2019’ by Interior Design.
